Akibat Peningkatan Suhu Laut, Jepang Sekarang Mendapat Serangan Jutaan Ubur - Ubur Raksasa - Jutaan ubur-ubur seukuran 6ft (1,8 meter), 440 lb (199,5 kg) berkumpul di lepas pantai barat Jepang. Kunjungan itu tampaknya didorong oleh peningkatan suhu laut dan penurunan predator alami.

Ubur-ubur Nomura adalah salah satu spesies makhluk terbesar di dunia. Skala mereka telah didemonstrasikan pada musim gugur tahun 2009, ketika sebuah perahu nelayan seukuran 10 ton tenggelam saat kru mencoba untuk menyeret jaring berisi puluhan makhluk itu.

Meningkatnya jumlah ubur-ubur telah direkam di Laut Jepang sejak tahun 2002. Para ahli mengatakan ledakan populasinya dalam beberapa tahun terakhir ini disebabkan oleh peningkatan suhu 1,89 derajat Fahrenheit di perairan Cina yang membuat kondisi yang lebih menguntungkan untuk pembibitan.

Faktor lain peningkatan populasinya adalah penurunan jumlah predator, yang meliputi penyu laut dan jenis ikan tertentu.

Jepang diserbu ubur-ubur itu pada skala yang sama pada musim panas tahun 2005, ketika ubur-ubur itu merusak jaring, menyambut umpan dengan sengatan beracun dan bahkan melukai nelayan. Pada tahun 2007, ada 15.500 laporan kerusakan peralatan penangkapan ikan yang disebabkan oleh makhluk itu.

Pada bulan November 2009, tiga orang awak dari Daisan Shinsho-maru beruntung berhasil melarikan diri ketika kapal pukat itu terbalik saat berusaha mengangkut jaring berisi puluhan ubur-ubur itu. ( tempointeraktif.com )
